Did you know that
in many studies, people rank their fear of public speaking higher than
their fear of death? Not us corporate comedians. (At least us good corporate
comedians!) We've already done most of our "dying" during our early days
in comedy clubs. As a corporate entertainer and cooperate comedian for
many years, I have seen many a presenter become a corporate comedian involuntarily,
much to his embarrassment - and as Dana Carvey (a brother corporate comedian)
used to say as President George H.W. Bush, "That's bad! That's bad!" I
and most of my fellow corporate comedians have learned the ropes, but
if you want to be a better presenter or have secret desire to be a corporate
entertainer read on, because I've dug in to the Official Corporate Comedians'
Secret Archives to get some helpful tips for you, because as I've often
heard it said in the boardroom, "He who can present gets noticed."
Corporate Comedians’ Presentation Rule #1: They NEED you to be the leader/expert. This is why every corporate entertainer has a powerful persona. The more in control you are by knowing your material and stepping up to lead, the more they'll relax and take you and your info in.
Corporate Comedians'
Presentation Rule #2: Ascertain what the audience has been through. Every
corporate entertainer is constantly doing this. Are they tired because
they have just eaten or it's late in the day? How are their current phychopolitics
affecting them? You have to know, because it's your job as a corporate
comedian to take them where they are and lead them by the hand.
Corporate Comedians' Presentation Rule #3: Nail the polka dotted elephants. Start off by talking about everyone's largest common experience. The first remark an overweight corporate comedian I know makes is about his ample girth, because it's the first thing they see. It puts everyone on the same page.
Corporate Comedians' Presentation Rule #4: Know your material and find the joy. Every corporate comedian and corporate entertainer I know knows their material cold.
The less energy they have to spend thinking about what they are talking about, the more freed up they are to go beyond their fear, and find that place of connection with an audience that is beyond fear and feels like bliss!
Good luck, and happy presenting!
